Franciacorta wines: discover the secrets of the designation of origin

Franciacorta is a hilly area in the province of Brescia, in Lombardy, famous for the production of high-quality sparkling wines. The 'Franciacorta' controlled designation of origin was established in 1967 and has also been recognised as a controlled and guaranteed designation of origin (DOCG) since 1995.

The Franciacorta wine production area covers an area of approximately 2,500 hectares, divided into 19 municipalities in the province of Brescia. The soil, of glacial origin, is composed of a mixture of clay, sand and pebbles, which gives the wines a particular structure and minerality.

The production of Franciacorta wines is mainly based on the cultivation of three grape varieties: chardonnay, pinot noir and pinot blanc. Chardonnay is the main grape variety and accounts for approximately 70% of the total production. Pinot noir is used to impart body and structure, while pinot blanc is used to produce fresher, fruitier wines.

The Franciacorta wine production technique involves fermentation in the bottle, also known as the classic method or champenoise. After fermentation, the wine is left to mature on the lees for at least 18 months, but some producers go as far as 60 months. This process gives the wine a particular finesse and aromatic complexity.

Franciacorta wines are known for their elegance, freshness and finesse. They are divided into three main types: brut, satèn and rosé. The brut is the most popular wine and represents about 70% of the total production. The satèn is a softer, creamier wine, obtained with less pressure during fermentation in the bottle. Rosé is a more structured wine, obtained by macerating red grapes before fermentation.

Franciacorta wine is a high-quality, internationally recognised product. The Controlled and Guaranteed Designation of Origin (DOCG) represents a guarantee mark for the consumer, who can be sure of purchasing a high quality product with a unique character.

In conclusion, Franciacorta wines represent Made in Italy excellence in the world of wine production. Thanks to their special production technique and the quality of the raw materials used, Franciacorta wines are able to satisfy the most demanding palates and represent an excellent choice for any occasion.
