Chardonnay is an international white grape variety that is grown in almost every wine growing area of the world. It is one of the most beloved and recognizable white grape varieties. It is hard to find a wine country that does not grow this international grape variety. There are approximately 210,000 hectares of chardonnay in the world. Our country is the fourth largest in the world in terms of area planted with Chardonnay with 20 thousand hectares planted.

The cradle of Chardonnay is Burgundy. It is believed that the variety's name comes from the name of the village, which translates to "covered in thistles," from the word chardon - thistle. Producers around the world are very fond of this variety because of its flexibility and versatility. "Generous" is the most accurate word that explains its popularity. This vine is not picky about the soil, maturing before the onset of cold weather, which allows for good harvests.

Chardonnay is actively used for the production of sparkling wines such as Franciacorta and Trento DOC. However still wines are common in Alto Adige, Friuli, Umbria, Tuscany, Apulia and Sicily. The taste and aroma of wine made of this grape is largely determined by the region where it is grown.
There are many styles of Chardonnay wines produced in hot and cold climates. Base wines from warmer regions usually have a velvety taste, with fruit, nuts and oats. wines aged in barrique show more mature, honeyed and buttery notes. Wines produced in cool climates give off hints of exotic fruit, with notes of banana, quince, passion fruit and mango with an aftertaste of fresh leaves and officinal herbs.
