The Fattoria Pagano experience was born in 2001 from the foresight of Antonio Pagano, who had a great idea: to make Falerno del Massico known to the world. Very few people know that Falerno del Massico is the descendant of the famous Roman wine Falernum, which was considered among the absolute best reds by the emperors and patricians of Rome. However, despite its extraordinary fame in ancient times, with the decline of the Roman Empire and its subsequent fall, the traces of this mythical wine were lost. The rediscovery of the Monte Massico production area began during the 19th century, but it is only in the last 40 years that a few producers in the area have decided to recover the great tradition by reintroducing a wine that could recall the famous nectar of ancient Roman times. Thus was born the rediscovery of a great terroir and a wine that today rightfully ranks among the best of Campania's oenology. Antonio was one of the pioneers of this project, dictated solely by his love for his land. The company is divided into two different territorial areas: Casertano and Irpinia. In the Casertano area, the vineyards extend over two terraces below the municipality of Casale di Carinola (CE), from which there is a unique view of Ischia, Procida and the Gulf of Gaeta. Vineyards of Aglianico, Piedirosso and Falanghina planted in 2002, 2003 and 2004 alternate with pre-existing old vines that have been producing local white and red grape varieties for over 70 years. The altitude is between 270 m and 300 m above sea level, behind the extinct volcano of Roccamonfina and about 5 km from the sea. The presence of the volcanic soil and the proximity to the sea create a geo-climatic balance that is fundamental for wine production. The considerable temperature range between day and night stimulates the synthesis of olfactory and taste precursors, which give the wines their indispensable fingerprint. In Irpinia, on the other hand, two indigenous varieties are cultivated that complement the range of our products: Greco di Tufo and Fiano di Avellino. The vine-growing areas are Tufo and Lapio respectively; here the altitude is between 500 and 600 metres and the soil is characterised by the presence of clay and limestone and boasts a south-west exposure. This area represents the terroir of excellence for the production of the two white wines that have always characterised this wonderful corner of the world.
