Description

Lacryma Christi (or Lacryma Christi del Vesuvio) is one of the most famous wines of Vesuvian viticulture, whose origin, as is the case with the best Italian wines, is lost in history and legend. According to the regulations, Lacryma Christi can be white red or rosé.
The name, in fact, derives from a legend that says that Lucifer, the angel chased out of Paradise for his nefarious deeds, spitefully stole a piece of Paradise and, as soon as he had completed the theft, sank into the bowels of Hell, leaving behind him a chasm from which Vesuvius rose. It is said that Jesus, recognising the stolen Paradise in the Gulf of Naples, wept copious tears and from his tears were born the vineyards of this wine.
Historically, viticulture was practised in these areas near Torre del Greco as far back as the 5th century BC, thanks to the Greek Thessalian population. One thing is certain: today as in the past, the eruptions of the volcano give extraordinary fertility to the soil and a unique taste to Lacryma Christi.
This wine is a surprising fusion of Piedirosso and Aglianico grapes and Villa Dora draws the grapes from vines planted in 1980 in volcanic soil. The soil of ash and lapilli gives the wine a minerality underlined by notes of blackberry and blood orange, while maturation in second and third passage wood gives it an elegant spiciness of star anise. A unique experience in a wine of intense character.
