Name:
Laphroaig Quarter Cask Single Malt Scotch Whisky 70cl (Canned)
Cellar
Laphroaig, is a Gaelic term meaning "the beautiful hollow over the wide valley", or rather Islay, the motherland of peaty Scotch whisky, whose velvety smoky sensation contributes to making it truly unique. The distillery was founded in 1815 and despite its centuries-long history and multiple changes of ownership, the Laphroaigh distillery has never abandoned the production system desired by tradition. In fact, it is one of the few Scottish distilleries that produces part of its own malted barley on the floor and is the only one that still extracts the peat by hand, without "squeezing" it with the use of machinery, but preserving it with all its precious vegetable oils. Water also plays a leading role: rainwater filters through layers of peat until it finds the hard rock before flowing out. This natural process makes it a unique and essential ingredient. As far as distillation is concerned, the plant has a battery of no less than seven stills, three wash stills for the first distillation, and four spirit stills for the second. This forces the distillery manager to put the newly obtained distillate into a blending tank to keep its character constant. Former bourbon casks, Maker's Mark and Jim Beam, and Quarter Cask are used for ageing. Once the cask ageing is complete, the product is brought to the optimum strength for bottling.
Description
The words 'Quarter Cask' on the label mean that ageing does not take place in traditional 250 litre casks, but in smaller 125 litre barrique-style casks. This results in faster oxygenation, shorter maturation times, the body and aroma remain intact and less alcohol is lost. This method of producing Laphroaig® Quarter Cask is inspired by the ancient tradition of transporting whisky on pack horses. A smooth, velvety single malt, full of lively, unexpected notes and broader flavours and aromas.
Organoleptic characteristics:
Brilliant gold in colour, the nose opens with hints of coconut, banana and vanilla followed by alpine herbs, balsamic and brackish. In the mouth it shows a full body, with a well-calibrated alcoholic thrust. Saline notes consistent with the olfactory examination are perceived on the tongue. Balanced, with a pleasant finish that fades sweet and smoky.
Storage time:
over 20 years
Vinification
This quarter cask whisky is barrier filtered to preserve all the character developed in the small but powerful 125 litre casks.
