Dominique is the custodian of a heritage with an 800-year history. Following a donation from the lord of Tonnerre in 1212, the monks of Quincy Abbey identified Epineuil as an exceptional terroir for the production of quality wine. They then developed an intense activity around this splendid vineyard, which quickly became renowned beyond those borders. The vineyard prospered until it was destroyed by phylloxera at the end of the 19th century. The winegrowers then replanted the best vineyards. In 1990, the Gruhier family began the restoration of this magnificent property that had already been renovated in the 18th century, work that would continue for the next 20 years. In 2010, the Domaine began the process of conversion to organic farming and in 2012 the 800th anniversary of the estate was celebrated. Now the Domaine covers 28 hectares and produces Bourgogne Epineuil and Bourgogne Tonnerre, but also and above all great Chablis. Epineuil is a small commune of only 100 hectares in total. It is located in the Tonnerrois region in northern France, making it a very cool wine region. The famous Chablis-like limestone soils, combined with a unique microclimate, favour excellent growing conditions for Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Gris. DOMINIQUE GRUHIER now produces an extraordinary range of wines under the almost forgotten red designation 'Epineuil'. The wines are classic in style and with the change in philosophy (and climate!) have found new depth and perspective. This is one of the largest red wine estates in the northernmost appellations of Burgundy.
