Winery
The Rocca di Frassinello winery was born from a very simple idea, that of replicating the Castellare di Castellina model of excellence in a new territory, the center of Maremma. This is an area incredibly suited for the cultivation of vines; it is included in the municipalities of Gavorrano and Roccastrada. It was there that the first, and to date only, Italian-French joint venture project for wine production took shape. The agreement between Castellare and Domaines Barons de Rothschild Lafite, i.e., the most famous wine signature of France and the world, envisioned from the outset bringing together Castellare's expertise in the cultivation and winemaking of Tuscany's princely varietal, Sangioveto, and Lafite's expertise in classic French varietals, Cabernet, Merlot, Petit Verdot, and Shiraz.
Rocca di Frassinello's wines are all blends except for Baffonero-a challenger to Masseto in the spirit of America's Cup, the most famous Italian wine of our friends Marchesi Frescobaldi, owners of Ornellaia-which is 100% merlot. Exactly the opposite of Castellare di Castellina's philosophy where native grape varieties are not made blended with international ones. The first official vintage was 2004 with about 130 thousand bottles produced.
