Solaris

Ll Solaris is one of those varieties defined by the German acronym PIWI used to identify grapes and the resulting wines resistant to the main vine diseases. They are the result of decades of work and backcrossing between vitis vinifera varieties and other resistance-carrying vitis genera. They are not GMO, as the crosses are obtained by pollination and selection of seeds and plants. Solaris is considered by many to be 'the perfect vine'; it is highly resistant to most vine diseases and does not require constant chemical and pesticide treatments. Many producers even do without sulphur and copper, substances that are even permitted in organic farming. Thus, farmers do not need to traverse the vineyards with their heavy tractors and the substrate remains intact, alive and fertile.
Cultivated mainly in Trentino Alto Adige and, to a lesser extent, in Veneto and Piedmont, Solaris is not included in the specifications of any DOC or DOCG but plays a leading role in the IGT Dolomiti. Refined floral and fruity scents characterise the wines made from Solaris.
