Its curious name is probably due to the characteristic vegetative phases of the plant, all early, from ripening to budding, from flowering to veraison.
The vine is harvested at the end of August.
Nowadays Primitivo is mainly cultivated in the area of Manduria, in the province of Taranto, from which it is produced the DOC Primitivo di Manduria and the DOCG Primitivo di Manduria natural sweetand in Barese, in the territory of Gioia del Colle.
The Primitivo records a singular resemblance to the California grape Zinfandel. In fact, it is a globetrotting vine.
We find it on the other side of the Atlantic, in the United States of America. In California it represents one of the most ancient imported varieties, cultivated since 1860 with the name of Zinfandel, a name unknown in Europe. It is one of the most important grape varieties of United States of America, mainly used for red and rose wines of high quality.
For many years Primitivo has been used as a "blending" wine to reinforce wines from northern Italy, thanks to its natural high alcohol by volume, intense color and structure. Today, however, Primitivo is more and more often vinified as a single wine.
In the last 20 years has developed among the Apulian producers a greater awareness of the potential of the Primitivo and thanks to the important work of the winegrowers it has been possible to enhance this intense and powerful red wine of great elegance and finesse.
Today's primitivo is a wine robust, well structured with very good aromas identity, velvety palate and good longevity. It is a wine that both men and women like very much thanks to its soft, full, warm, sweet and elegant taste.
